How should Year 12 students use the summer before an Oxbridge application?

For 2027 entry, Oxford and Cambridge applications close at 18:00 UK time on 15 October 2026, roughly six weeks after most schools resume. That means the application is effectively built over the summer: course choice settled, personal statement drafted and redrafted, admissions-test registration confirmed, and super-curricular reading done that the student can discuss at interview. Why does the summer matter so much for Oxbridge?

Count backwards from 15 October. UCAS opens for submissions on 1 September 2026. Schools need time for references and predicted grades early in the autumn term, and admissions tests cluster in the weeks around the deadline. A student who arrives in September with a statement already through several drafts spends the autumn refining and preparing for tests and interviews; a student starting from zero spends it firefighting.

What should be drafted before September?

The personal statement, now three structured questions rather than one essay, should exist in full draft by the end of August, with time for redrafts. The third question, on preparation outside education, is where summer work shows up directly: what the student read, built, attended or investigated in July and August becomes the evidence that answer needs.

The course decision itself belongs at the start of the summer, not the end. Statement, test choice and college strategy all hang off it, and changing course in September resets all three.

What about admissions tests?

Most Oxford courses and many Cambridge courses require an admissions test, and each has its own registration window, typically closing in late September or early October, with the tests themselves sitting in October. Applicants needing access arrangements must apply by 15:00 UK on 10 September. Book early enough to leave real preparation time, and do not plan around the last available slots.

What counts as super-curricular preparation?

Work beyond the school syllabus, in the subject: serious reading, online lectures and courses, essay competitions, small research or building projects. Oxford and Cambridge interviews probe how a student thinks inside the discipline, and super-curricular material is usually what the conversation is built on. Two or three things engaged with deeply beat a long list every time. The interview question is never "what did you read?" but "what did you make of it?"
